Venezuelan Tostones or Patacones: homemade recipe

Ingredients

2 green plantains
Vegetable oil (enough for frying)
Salt to taste

Directions

1. Peel the green plantains by cutting off the ends and making a slit along the length of the plantain. Use the blade of the knife to gently pry the peel away from the flesh.
2. Slice the peeled plantains into rounds about 1 inch thick.
3. Heat enough vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat to submerge the plantain slices.
4. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the plantain slices. Fry them until they become light golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
5. Remove the plantains from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
6. Using the bottom of a glass or a plantain press, gently flatten each fried plantain slice.
7. Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry again until they are crispy and golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
8. Remove the tostones from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
9. Sprinkle with salt to taste while they are still hot. Serve immediately.
