HotDog Bread: homemade recipe

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
Optional: egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water)
Optional: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or other toppings

Directions

1. In a small bowl, dissolve 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar in 1/2 cup of warm milk (110°F/45°C). Sprinkle the instant yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture.

3. Add the frothy yeast mixture, 1 large egg, 1 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter, and 1/4 cup of warm water (110°F/45°C) into the well of the flour mixture.

4. Mix the ingredients until a dough begins to form. If you’re using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment to knead the dough on medium speed for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If kneading by hand, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes.

5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

6. Punch down the dough to release the air, then transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions for standard-sized hot dog buns.

7. Roll each portion into a log shape, about 5-6 inches in length, making sure the ends are smooth. Place the shaped dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced about 1-2 inches apart.

8. Cover the buns loosely with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let them rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until they have doubled in size.

9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

10. Optional: Brush the tops of the risen buns with egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water) for a shiny finish. Sprinkle sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or any other desired toppings over the egg wash.

11. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

12. Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.

13. Enjoy your freshly baked hot dog bread!
